After creating toiletry bags for vulnerable populations and donating food to local homeless shelters, organizers noticed the lack of PPE and social distancing in these facilities. Governor Pritzker visited the Champaign-Urbana community to discuss emergency funds necessary for small businesses to thrive during the pandemic. At the end of the press conference, Drake cried out to Governor Pritker in regards to the safety and well-being of homeless individuals. Natural Path Nutrition Inc.'s new initiative, Uproot Initiative, has taken lead in Champaign as its mission is to direct resources to high risk individuals on a targeted basis. Combating homelessness is just one way of achieving steps to this initiative.
By helping build a self organizing business, he plans to take things into his own hands by getting the community members involved and helping them take charge of their health and well-being. Building trust with people, connecting with them, discovering new resources, and working for the Champaign community are clear objectives. The community needs someone who understands the complexities of public health and how the social determinants of health are rooted in systemic issues against marginalized groups. He hopes to continue educating people on nutrition, community health, and the necessary interventions needed for more holistic approach to health and wellness.
Drake expressed deep concern in regards to the safety of the Champaign community and for the safety of the homeless in hopes to have had a lasting effect on JB Pritzker. Hopefully, this is just the beginning to helping a small, but big community like Champaign stay afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic.
