According to Traffic Safety Marketing in 2017, “seat belts saved an estimated 14,955 lives. Having a seatbelt on is one of the most important ways of saving your life during a crash. It is important for public health officials to advocate and promote proper seat belt usage in order to save the lives of many individuals.
In addition to advocating for seat belt usage it is important for minorities to know risks of not wearing a seat belt. There is an African American toolkit related to the importance of wearing a seat belt. The leading cause of unintentional deaths for African Americans of all ages is motor vehicle crashes. Ensuring the safety of yourself and your children can reduce the mortality rate of younger individuals in the African American community. In addition to the African American toolkit, there is a Hispanic toolkit for advocating for seat belt usage because motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among individuals 34 and under. Education and prevention methods are the best way to reduce death during a motor vehicle crash. Seat belt usage is important for yourself, your family and friends, and the lives of many others.
Consequences of Not Wearing a Seat Belt:
Not buckling up can cause you to be ejecting out of a vehicle during a crash, which can be deadly
Air bags are not enough to save you. In fact, the force of an airbag can lead to serious injury or death
Improper use of a seatbelt such as putting the strap under your arm can put you and your children at risk
